Millions of mines were planted in Angola during a 27-year civil war that ended in 2002. Despite an extensive de-mining programme, Angola remains one of the most mined countries in Africa and thousands of Angolans have been maimed. Recently, in the capital city Luanda, survivors of landmine injuries took part in a controversial pageant called Miss Landmine. With its motto βEveryone has the right to be beautiful,β Miss Landmine is designed to restore self-esteem in women injured in mine explosions. Our reporter Angela Robson went to Luanda to speak to some of the women involved.
