The British Government maintains that womenβs rights have improved in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban, although there is still much to be done. Twenty-five per cent of members of the Afghan parliament are women, yet maternal mortality and female illiteracy rates are among the highest in the world. A delegation of British Muslims has just returned from Afghanistan where it met with political and religious leaders to see what progress has been made in the fledging democracy.
