Israeli newspapers and news programmes have followed a high-profile case of honour killing in an Arab neighbourhood in the city of Ramle, near Tel Aviv. Honour killings are common in the city β 20 women have been murdered by family members in the past ten years. This case is different, however, because for the first time the women of the family are speaking out. Nine women of the Abu Ghanem family have been killed - the most recent in February when Hamda Abu Ghanem was found shot in her bed. According to her motherβs testimony, she was murdered by her brother for talking to a man.
Reporter Lipika Pelham has been to Ramle to find out more. She began by talking to one young woman, outside the Court of Justice, who survived an attempt on her life. | |
