The plight of women imprisoned far from their families.
Many effects of the failed communist state are still being felt by the Russian population - not least by its women who make up 70% of the country’s unemployed today. An increasing number of women are also being convicted of crimes and their prisons are largely the penal colonies of former Soviet times, often thousands of miles from home. Director Maria Yatskova’s has made a documentary film “Miss Gulag” about UF 91/9 all-women’s prison camp in Siberia. Oxford academic Dr Judith Pallot has been visiting these far flung colonies, in an attempt to assess their impact on the women and their families.
Miss Gulag will be showing at the Sheffield International Documentary Festival between 7th-11th November
