The new multi-million dollar industry

Call centres and information technology have become synonymous with India’s booming economy but these are not the sub-continent’s only developing industries. In the last couple of years, an increasing number of women from the UK, US, Japan, Korea and elsewhere are coming to India to employ a surrogate mother.

And increasing numbers of Indian women, many of them poor and looking to improve their lives, are coming forward to carry babies for others unable to give birth themselves. Sunita Thakur reports from Anand in Gujarat, where in the past year alone there’s been a 60% rise in reproductive tourism.
