Margaret Owen talks about the plight of women in the Congo.
Truth, it's said, is the first casualty of war. But in reality it is often women who are the first casualties. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, decades of conflict have seen husbands, fathers, brothers, and sons massacred. With no rights to inheritance or land ownership and unable to work, it's a country where widowhood is vilified and women are vulnerable not only to gang rape but mutilations and torture. Jenni discusses the plight of the widows in the Congo with Margaret Owen, director of Widows for Peace through Democracy, and Marie-Claire Faray, who is involved with a number of international women's organisations including Women for the Development of Democratic Republic of Congo. | |
