Political crisis over headscarf ban in Turkish universities
Turkey is in deep political crisis. After six years in power, the ruling Justice and Development Party, the AKP, finds itself in the dock in Turkey’s constitutional court for “seeking to undermine secularism”. The court could decide to ban the party and forbid its leading figures including the current prime minister from holding office. The crisis was triggered by the government’s recent decision to lift the ban on headscarves being worn by women in universities. Jane is joined by Dr Gulnur Aybet, Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Kent, to discuss why the wearing of headscarves is such an emotive issue in Turkey and asks where Turkey’s current identity crisis leaves women’s rights. | |
