Dr. Kiran Bedi
Police Chief turned Television Star

The first woman to join the Indian Police Services, Dr Kiran Bedi, has become a feminist icon in her home country. As Inspector General of Tihar Jail, she successfully brought in radical changes such as introducing yoga and meditation and banning smoking. After leaving the police force in 2007, she has embarked on a career in television; becoming a mediator on the popular Indian series ‘Aap Ki Kachehri’ (‘The People’s Court). As the programme prepares to launch on British screens, Jane talks to Kiran Bedi about her fresh start.
‘Aap Ki Kachehri’ (The People’s Court) starts its broadcast run on Star Plus from 5 January at 10.00pm.
