Microfinance loans – a route out of poverty for the poorest women in the world
This Sunday is International Women’s Day, and business women in the UK and other parts of the developed world are being encouraged to do their bit, via microfinance, to help some of the poorest women in the world become entrepreneurs. Barack Obama’s mother, Ann Dunham, was a pioneer of microfinance in Indonesia - it’s a way whereby small businesses in the developing world get loans to help them begin and grow. Most of the recipients are female. Jenni is joined by Lydia Opoku, Africa Programme Manager for Opportunity International UK. She does a lot of work in her native Ghana helping women set up in business. Also taking part is Herta von Stiegel, Executive Chairman of Ariya Capital Group who has invested her own money in microfinance projects.
