Important step forward for women’s rights in the Gulf

Kuwaiti women have had the right to vote and stand in Parliamentary elections since 2005, the same year that the Emir nominated the first woman to join his Government. But there were no women in the country’s Parliament until this weekend, when four won seats in a general election. It has been heralded by one of the winning candidates as a ‘major leap forward’ for Kuwaiti democracy. But what will it mean for political life in Kuwait and the wider Gulf region?
