Northern SoulThursday 27 February 2003
Northern Soul is a musical movement which saw dance clubs in the north take neglected Black American music to it's heart - keeping the careers of scores of performers alive - many of them still unappreciated back home.

A new play called Once Upon A Time in Wigan has opened at the Contact Theatre in Manchester. It looks at the heyday of the Casino that became synonymous with the phenomenon known as Northern Soul.
Jo Wallis and DJ and author David Haslam join Jenni to discuss whether it does deserve it's reputation as a club for boys where women know their place?
'Once Upon A Time in Wigan' runs until 1 March at the Contact Theatre, Manchester and then on tour.
