Mistress of the HouseFriday 25 July 2003
Imagine having unlimited funds to spend on decorating a stately home or even building one of your own. A few fortunate women in the 18th century were able to do just that.

For her book Mistress of the House: Great Ladies and Grand Houses Rosemary Baird researched many aristocratic ladies and is herself the curator of the collection at Goodwood in West Sussex.
Rosemary Baird joins Martha to tell her more about her research.
Mistress of the House: Great Ladies and Grand Houses (1670-1830) is published by Weidenfeld Nicolson Illustrated; ISBN: 0297830783.
