Composer, Amy Beach was one of the foremost women composers of the early 20th century, an era when women were more likely to make music in the privacy of their own homes than on the public stage.
Amy's career began as a concert pianist, but her husband encouraged her to concentrate on composing as he was reluctant to allow her to perform in public. She became one of America's most celebrated composers, creating more than 150 published works. Ambache Chamber Ensemble, an orchestra led by pianist and musical director Diana Ambache, is releasing a CD of her work and has been talking to Claudia Hammond about what drew her to Amy's work.
