Trevor Munro's Story
Trevor, or Grandpa as he was to my brother and me, served in 1917 and 1918 on the 'Western front ' in France, as a private in the 10th Australian Field Ambulance, Australian Army Medical Corps, Aust.Imperial Force (the "first A.I.F."). He was a stretcher bearer and giver of the most immediate first aid to wounded men in the field.
Grandpa never talked to us about his time in the war, about the things he must have seen and had to do. The only clue was the cough which plagued him for the rest of his life, from the mustard gas. To us he was simply the most wonderful grandpa. We were so lucky: how many generations were robbed of their wonderful dads and grandpas?
