Frank's Story
The picture shows Private Frank Wallen and two of his brother soldiers with their ambulance, "Lizzie" at Casualty Clearing Station No. 49 at Caudry in March of 1919. The picture was sent to Frank's wife: "This was taken outside our hospital at Caudry, France. If you look very closely, you will see your name on the lorry. With love from hubby." This was 'Lizzie'. Dated -3-1919. He always said that he was "First up, last away."
He survived the war but hardly ever spoke of it. He returned to his civilian trade as a taxi driver, having been one of the first in London before the war.
He died in 1950, and so I never had a chance to talk to him about his army days.
