Alfred's Story
In memory of my maternal grandfather, Alf Gains, who served as a Driver with the Army Service Corps from 1916 to 1919. Saw service in France and Southern Serbia (now Macedonia). Was present at the surrender of the Bulgarian Army near Lake Doiran, September 30, 1918.
Thomas Alfred (Alf) Gains
This event led indirectly to the collapse of the Central Powers, with Austria-Hungary suing for peace soon afterwards and the Armistice in November 1918.
He said little but endured so much - both in war and in the peace that followed.
A life remembered.
