Walter's Story

My Great Uncle Walter went to the First World War, having already buried both his parents. My father also served in the trenches at the age of 18, but returned, slightly the worse for wear, having been gassed. My father, throughout the whole of his life, never would discuss his WW1 experiences, and certainly never mentioned his Uncle Walte, so I cannot be sure whether or not my father was aware of his death.

Walter was a driver in the Royal Army Service Corps and must have witnessed scenes of indescribable carnage. He died just eight days short of his 37th Birthday, and 89 days short of the signing of the Armistice. He is buried at Mendinghem Military Cemetery in Belgium. As far as I am aware, his name does not appear on any WW1 War Memorial in the United Kingdom - I hope to correct.
