If George Evans was on Mastermind, there's no doubt his specialist subject would be Wellington and the Wrekin. Nobody knows more about the area than George, and in his 82 years he has accumulated an amazing collection of stories that he will gladly share. But if you have such a fund of knowledge, a better way of sharing it is to write about it. 'Window on Wellington' is George's 19th book - which he insists will be the last in the series. | "'Have you lived all your life in Wellington?'... 'Not yet!'" | | George Evans |
'Window on Wellington' is a collection of essays about what George calls 'a people town'. There are few grand buildings, little in the way of memorable architecture, but its people are what make Wellington unique. You could be forgiven for thinking George is marketing manager for Wellington Ltd. as his enthusiasm for his place bubbles through, but reading the opening chapter about Wellington Market really makes you want to go and explore the stalls for yourself. George Evans will never run out of things to say about Wellington and he will be talking to audiences large and small for many years to come, but there are only so many books to be written on the subject. George has decided 19 is the limit. But what next? George won't let his literary talents lie fallow. He has already started writing children's stories - there will be giants and dragons around the Wrekin. So far, they have been enjoyed by his great-grandchildren, but perhaps at some Wellington Literary Festival in the future, there will be the launch of a new George Evans book. |
