Raj is just like a Baghban (meaning gardener) who believes in planting a tree for the future. By nurturing it, he hopes to bask in its shade when he grows old. So Raj and Pooja dedicate their lives to the upbringing of their four sons. To give them a better future, Raj invests his life savings in their education. Raj believes that he can reap the rewards of his financial sacrifice when he grows old when his sons will look after him. As a result, their sons now live life filled with love and prosperity, thanks to the opportunity their education has given them. But when Raj retires, life suddenly changes. | Amitabh Bachchan as Raj Malhotra with his wife Pooja. |
None of the four sons is ready to take on the responsibility of parents. Life becomes so difficult that both Raj and Pooja begin to depend on the kindness of strangers. How Raj overcomes this turmoil through strife and hardship forms the climax of Baghban. Baghban raises one vital question for Indian society and that is can you really depend on your family? The film is slated for an October 2003 release. Previewed by Manish Gajjar, BBC Shropshire's Mr Bollywood.
