This week, broadcaster and jazz pianist and singer-songwriter Jamie Cullum is sitting in for Soweto. From Monday to Thursday, Jamie is joined by leading UK pianist Neil Cowley. A celebrated jazz artist, and classically trained musician, Neil is well known for his 'Neil Cowley Trio', with their signature mix of jazz and rock, and engaging live performances. Neil is also a first-call pianist for other artists, including with seminal R&B, funk and soul bands the Brand New Heavies and Zero 7, and with Adele, Emeli Sandé, and Michael Kiwanuka. After a 7-year hiatus from the trio to pursue solo projects, Neil reunited with them in 2024. His most recent album is a celebration of one of his key and early influences, titled Built on Bach. From Monday to Thursday, Neil is giving Flowers to some of the contemporary artists that he admires. To start his selections, Neil picks a drummer and vocalist whose musical approach he appreciates. There is also music from DJ Harrison and Yazmin Lacey, Elliot Galvin, and Nina Simone. To listen on most smart speakers, just say "Ask BBC Sounds to play Round Midnight".
