Joey trains as a cavalry mount and has his first encounter with Topthorn, a splendid black stallion who becomes his firm friend. Before long they find themselves on a troop ship, bound for the battlefields of France. Once there they take part in their first action - a cavalry charge that ends with Joey riderless.
