Joey and Topthorn find themselves back in the fearful noise and stench of battle, hauling their gun carriage to the front line. Life is tough for the army horses living outside in all weathers and Joey sees the conditions take their toll on all the horses, but particularly on his friend, Topthorn. But Topthorn survives under the care of a new friend, a German soldier called Friedrich.
