More than 3,200 lawyers say the government should drop a plan to abolish some jury trials. They’ve written to the PM, saying there is no evidence it will solve unprecedented delays in criminal courts. The proposal would replace juries in England and Wales with a single judge in cases where a convicted defendant could be jailed for up to three years. Justice Secretary David Lammy says it could help turn around the Crown Court backlog, which has reached record levels of 80,000 cases. 5 Live listeners share their thoughts with Nicky Campbell.
