Written by Frances Hodgson Burnett and first published in a magazine in 1910, The Secret Garden tells the story of a young orphan girl sent to live with relatives in North Yorkshire. In the large mansion house, Misselthwaite Manor, she discovers a neglected but enchanted garden. The story is a classic - but why is it so full of references to North Yorkshire?
