Sorenstam's first professional victory came in Australia in 1994

Annika Sorenstam takes part in her final professional tournament at the Dubai Masters beginning on Thursday.

The 38-year-old from Sweden, winner of 10 majors, 72 LPGA events and 17 other international titles, announced her decision to retire in May this year.

"I can't think of a better time to step away from the game, because it's in such good shape," she said.

"On the LPGA, we have Lorena Ochoa, Yani Tseng is playing awesome golf and Paula Creamer's playing fantastically."

Sorenstam has won on both her previous visits to the Majlis course at the Emirates Golf Club, in 2006 and 2007.

Her preparation for her farewell event was unusual, including a four-day visit to India for a yoga retreat.

"I'm here to enjoy it. I've got both sets of parents here and my sister is here and we all want a little bit of a celebration week," said the Swede, the only female player to card a round of 59.

"Hopefully, I can play some good golf as well, but I just really want to come and enjoy it and get a chance to absorb everything and to leave with some great memories.

"I feel very good about leaving the game in such a good time. You know, it's up to them now to carry it on, and I'll be watching it very closely and wishing them the very best."

With second-placed Helen Alfredsson of Sweden not in the field, France's Gwladys Nocera is assured of winning the European Tour Order merit title.
