Watson is the top-ranked Briton as Robson now plays more senior events |
Heather Watson won twice on Saturday to reach the US Open girls' final, but fellow Briton Laura Robson went out in the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows. With rain disrupting the schedule, the girls' singles matches were moved indoors, with the quarter-finals and semis played in quick succession. Guernsey's Watson, 17, beat Wimbledon champion Noppawan Lertcheewakarn before defeating Russia's Daria Gavrilova. Londoner Robson, 15, beat Lauren Davis but could not get past Yana Buchina. British number one Watson began the day with a highly impressive 6-2 6-1 win over second seed Lertcheewakarn of Thailand. The 11th seed then thrashed ninth seed Gavrilova 6-3 6-0. Robson, the Wimbledon 2008 junior champion, defeated American Davis 6-2 6-3 but went down 1-6 6-3 7-5 to Buchina of Russia. Robson was unseeded in New York after playing more senior than junior events over the last year.
