Shot through with folk melodies, Mussorgsky’s ‘national music drama’ Khovanshchina weaves a richly coloured operatic tapestry in which Russia herself is the heroine. Semyon Bychkov conducts the BBC SO and an exciting cast, including Elena Maximova.

In a Prom of wide-ranging emotions Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune, gives way to Ravel’s jazzy Piano Concerto. Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Hibiki is a sequence of threnodies offering solace after loss. Kazushi Ono conducts the BBC SO.

The BBC SO and Chief Conductor Sakari Oramo are joined by soloists Elizabeth Watts and Elisabeth Kulman in addition to the combined forces of the BBC Symphony Chorus and The Bach Choir as they perform Mahler’s epic ‘Resurrection’ Symphony.

This year’s Elgar cycle concludes with the originally unfinished Third Symphony. The concert also features the vivid, descriptive miniatures of Sibelius’s Scènes historiques and Saint-Saëns’s brilliantly youthful Second Piano Concerto.

Rising star conductor Jakub Hrůša presents an all-Czech concert with the BBC SO and the BBC Singers. Smetana’s evocative tone-poem Ma vlast sits alongside Martinů’s Field Mass and Suk’s Prague. This is music of protest, anger and national pride.

Semyon Bychkov conducts the BBC SO in an all-Russian Prom that climaxes with Tchaikovsky’s Manfred. Kirill Gerstein is the soloist for Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 1, whose beauty is a natural companion to Taneyev’s brooding Oresteia overture.
