JOURNEY TO THE WEST By Theresa Teng Theresa has lived in the UK for twenty years and both her children were born here. In her heart she still feels Chinese but is concerned her children are missing out on their cultural heritage. She runs the Huaxia Chinese School in Manchester in her spare time as a volunteer, which opens on Sundays to teach Chinese language and cultural studies. Without it she worries that children born in Britain of Chinese parents could loose touch with their Chinese roots. The school is performing a story from the ancient Chinese book, The Monkey King's Journey to the West. Called “Fighting the White Bone Demon” it teaches culture, history and language in a fun way. As Theresa helps the children prepare for their performance, she reflects on her own journey to the west.
