Week 18 - Main grammatical points
Note the use of 'meddai' and 'meddwn' when someone is quoting what someone else has said
For example
Agnes says 'A doedd Brian yn gwybod dim - meddai fe' Brian knew nothing (so) he said
The full forms are:
Meddwn i - I said
Meddet ti - you said
Meddai hi - she said
Meddai fe/fo - he said
Medden ni - we said
Meddech chi - you said
Medden nhw - they said
'I would like' can be expressed in different ways in Welsh
You might hear 'Baswn i'n hoffi' or 'Byddwn i'n hoffi'.
The following short forms are also commonly used
Hoffwn i
Hoffet ti
Hoffai e/o
Hoffai hi
Hoffen ni
Hoffech chi
Hoffen nhw
The negative forms are:
Hoffwn i ddim
And the question forms
Hoffet ti? with the answers Hoffwn - Yes, and Na hoffwn - No
In colloquial Welsh you might also hear the forms
Liciwn i
Liciet ti
Liciai e/o
Liciai hi
Licien ni
Liciech chi
Licien nhw
The negative and question forms follow the usual pattern.
