There are several ways of saying 'because' in Welsh. Let's have a look at them and the constructions that follow them.
Achos/Am/Oherwydd/Gan
Achos can be followed by either the normal verb form achos mae e'n ifanc because he's young or achos roedd hi'n hwyr because she was late.
Achos can also be followed by the bod construction
Agnes says : Achos ei fod e wedi boddi - Because he has drowned
Oherwydd is slightly more formal and it is followed by the bod construction:
Oherwydd ei fod e wedi boddi because he has drowned Oherwydd fy mod i'n hwyr because I'm late Oherwydd bod glaw ar y ffordd because there's rain on the way
Am and gan can also be used to convey the same meaning. Both are followed by bod
Am fy mod i wedi blino - Gan fy mod i wedi blino because I'm tired.
Rhyw
Jenny says: Wnes i ffonio rhyw awr yn ôl - I phoned about an hour ago.
Rhyw is used here to show that there is an element of uncertainty in the statement.
Mae rhyw ddyn wrth y drws - There's some man at the doorMae rhyw gar wedi parcio yno - Some car has parked there
