BBC - Catchphrase - Ysbyty Brynaber - week47

Week 47 - Main grammatical points
Ychydig o/Digon o/Nifer o/Llawer o/Gormod o

Jenny says: Dw i yn y fflat ers ychydig o wythnosau - Ive been in the flat for a few weeks
Agnes thinks: Sa i'n credo bod digon o arian gyda fe - I don't think that he's got much money

Ychydig o and digon o follow the same pattern they are followed in general by plural forms of the nouns

Other similar forms are:

Mwy o mwy o ffrindiau more friends
Nifer o nifer o gemau a number of games
Gormod o gormod o blant too many children
Gormod o arian too much money

Note particularly that rhy too is NOT used with gormod. A common error amongst Welsh learners is to say rhy gormod. This is incorrect.

Am

Arwyn says: Mae Jenny am inni roi'r tŷ ar y farchnadArwyn wants us to put the house on the market

Am in this context expresses a wish.

Listen to these forms:

Dw i am fod yn nyrs - I want to be a nurse
Beth wyt ti am brynu? - What do you want to buy?
Dw i am orffen hwn cyn mynd adre - I want to finish this before I go home.

Note that when am is emphasised it expresses intention and determination:

Dw i am fynd - I intend going
Mae hi am fod yn nyrs - She intends being a nurse
Wyt ti wir am brynu hwnna? - Do you really intend buying that?

Bod
A number of examples of clauses introduced by bod feature in this week's drama:

Roeddwn i'n meddwl dy fod ti a fe'n siwtio'ch gilydd.I thought that you and him suited each other.
Mae hi'n dal i feddwl ei fod o'n fyw.
She still thinks that he's alive.

Pam wyt ti'n meddwl ei bod hi'n byw yn ei hen fflat o?
Why do you think that she's living in his flat?

Smo ti'n meddwl ei bod hi'n ffantastig.
Don't you think she's fantastic.
Roeddwn i'n meddwl ei bod hi'n dechrau drysu.
I thought that she was starting to go mad.

Sa i'n credu ei fod e'n edrych ar รดl ei hun.
I don't think that he's looking after himself.

Meddwl and credu are verb forms that are followed by the bod construction. To recap the full forms are:

Fy mod i
Dy fod ti
Ei fod e
Ei bod hi
Ein bod ni
Eich bod chi
Eu bod nhw

Remember that when a noun or a proper noun is used bod does not change:

Bod Arwyn
Bod y nyrs
Bod y plant
