BBC - Catchphrase - Ysbyty Brynaber - Week57

Week 57 - Main grammatical points

Prepositions followed by pronouns

Brian says:
Y sefyllfa dw i ynddi rwan
The situation I am in now

In Welsh we cannot end a sentence with a preposition which does take the pronoun form to which it refers.

Ynddi:
in it is used because it refers back to the word sefyllfa situation
It is grammatically incorrect to say
Y ty; dwi'n byw yn
The house in which I live y ty; dw i'n byw ynddo
Yr esgidau mae hi'n sefyll ynddyn nhw

The full forms of yn are:
Yno i
Ynot ti
Ynddo fe
Ynddi hi
Ynddon ni
Ynddoch chi
Ynddyn nhw

Jac Whelan says:
Dw i'n gwybod o brofiad neth wyt ti'n mynd trwyddo fo
I know from experience what you are going through

Trwyddo fo though it. Again the it refers to profiad (a masculine noun)

The full forms of trwy are:
Trwyddo i
Trwyddot ti
Trwyddi hi
Trwyddo fe
Trwyddon ni
Trwyddoch chi
Trwyddyn nhw

Note that often in speech trwy is pronounced drwy.
Medru
Brian asks Wendy:
Sut fedri di gysgu?
Fedri di is from the veb 'medru' to be able to. It is generally heard in North Walian dialects. In south Wales the form is gallu.

The full forms of medru in the present tense are:
Mi fedra i
Mi fedri di
Mi fedrith o
Mi fedrith hi
Mi fedrwn ni
Mi fedrwch chi
Mi fedran nhw

The negative forms are Fedra i ddim and the Question Forms Fedra i?

Note that the answers will depend on the person for example:

Fedri di nofio - Medra/Na Fedra
Fedrith o - Medrith/Na Fedrith
Fedran nhw - Medran/Na fedran
