BBC - Catchphrase - Ysbyty Brynaber - Week 73
Week 73 - Main Grammatical Points
There's a bitter taste in a lot of people's mouths this week - Brian's on holiday in Lanzarote and hates everything about the place; Jac's fear and hatred of water is still apparent as he continues his physiotherapy in the hospital pool; and Agnes reveals to Jac that she simply can't stand Brian's guts...
There are two different ways in Welsh to convey the feeling of hatred. You can either use the verbal noun 'casáu' - to hate.
Dw i'n casáu / I hate
Or you can use the construction:
Mae'n gas gen i in NW
or
Mae'n gas 'da fi in SW - literally meaning: "it is hateful with me"
Mae'n gas gen i
Mae'n gas 'da fi
Remember to conjugate the preposition 'gan' accordingly and follow it with a soft mutation:
Let's look at some examples.
To say : "Brian hates sand" - tywod - sand - you can say either:
Mae Brian yn casáu tywod
Or
Mae'n gas gan Brian dywod
To say: She hates beer - cwrw
You can say either:
Mae hi'n casáu cwrw
Or
Mae'n gas ganddi hi gwrw
However, I hope you don't have too much occasion to use these particular constructions!
Note the difference between:
Yn byw
And the mutated form
Yn fyw
The first - yn byw - means to live
Mae Jenny yn byw ym Mrynaber
Jenny lives in Brynaber
But - yn fyw - means alive
- Ydy hi wedi marw?
- Nag ydy, mae hi'n fyw!
- Is she dead?
- No, she's alive!
This is where a mutation is vital!!
