Describing Clothes
In this section we will learn how to descibe clothes and colours. | Lliwiau | Colours | | Amryliw | Multicoloured | | Lliwgar | Colourful |
Here are some other words to describe clothes: | Cynnes | Warm | | Ysgafn | Light | | Trwchus | Thick | | Tenau | Thin | | Gwlanog | Woolly | | Trwsiadus | Smart | | Ffurfiol | Formal | | Anffurfiol | Informal |
When we describe objects we need to remember 2 things: 1) In Welsh the adjective comes after the noun. For example, red car - car coch 2) All nouns are either feminine or masculine.
If the object described is feminine the adjective that follows it mutates. It is a soft mutation; here's how the letters change:
t > d, c > g, p > b, b > f, g > letter is dropped, ll > l, m > f, rh > r. | Masculine | Feminine | | Crys du | Blows ddu | | Trowsus coch | Sgert goch | | Jîns glas | Ffrog las | | Tei pinc | Sgert binc | | Sgarff porffor | Het borffor | | Trons llwyd | Esgid lwyd | | Fest brown | Maneg frown | If the adjective follows a plural it doesn't mutate: We say esgid goch (red shoe) but esgidiau coch (red shoes). | | | | | | | |
