The past

Now that you can talk about your morning routine in the present tense here's how to use the past tense.

Dw i'n codiCodais iI got up
Dw i'n molchiMolchais iI washed myself
Dw i'n gwisgoGwisgais iI got dressed
Dw i'n bwytaBwytais iI ate

Notice that what we're doing is adding a personal ending to something called the stem of the verb. How do we find the stem?

If the verb ends with a vowel we drop the vowel

(In Welsh the vowels are a e i o u w y)

gwisgo gwisgais i

If the verb ends with -io we drop the o.

ffonio (to telephone) ffoniais i

If the verb ends in -ed / -eg we drop the end.

cerdded (to walk) cerddais i
rhedeg (to run) rhedais i
also - gweld (to see) gwelais

  • The object of a conjugated verb mutates. In other words the word directly after a verb in the past mutates:
  • Bwytais i frecwast.(brecwast)I ate breakfast.
    Gwelais i gi.(ci)I saw a dog.
    Darllenais i lyfr.(llyfr)I read a book.
