Children

In this section we will learn to talk about plant - children.

To ask someone if they have children we say:
Oes plant gyda chi?

or, more informally
Oes plant gyda ti?

The response is: Oes / Nac oes! (There are/There are not)

Mae un plentyn gyda fi.I have one child.
Mae dau o blant gyda fi.I have two children.
Mae tri o blant gyda fi.I have three children.
Mae pedwar o blant gyda fi.I have four children.

  • We always use a singular noun after a number, for example pedwar plentyn (literally translated 'four child'). Pedwar plant is incorrect.
  • Although it is totally correct to say pedwar plentyn the pattern pedwar o blant (four of children) is more common in everyday speech. We use the plural after 'o' and the word plant mutates: tri o blant, pedwar o blant.


    • In Welsh every noun is feminine or masculine. There are also feminine numbers from one to four. These are used with feminine nouns.
    Mab - sonMerch - daughter
    Mae un mab gyda fi.Mae un ferch gyda fi.
    Mae dau fab gyda fi.Mae dwy ferch gyda fi.
    Mae tri mab gyda fi.Mae tair merch gyda fi.
    Mae pedwar mab gyda fi.Mae pedair merch gyda fi.

  • Notice that there is a soft mutation after the feminine un, as well as dau and dwy.
  • Punt (a pound) in another feminine noun. We always say dwy bunt, tair punt and pedair punt.
  • Remember that we use the singular 'mab' and 'merch' after a number.
  • O'r enw = called
    • Mae un mab gyda fi o'r enw Rhys.I have one son called Rhys.
    Mae un ferch gyda fi o'r enw Nia.I have one daughter called Nia.
