  • Born 1945 in Colombo, Sri Lanka - then known as Ceylon
  • Her father, Solomon Bandaranaike, was Prime Minister for three years from 1956-he was assassinated in 1959. In 1960 her mother, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, was elected Prime Minister
  • Chandrika studied at the Sorbonne, Paris
  • 1978 married Vijaya Kumaratunga, popular film star and founded Sri Lanka People's Party with Chandrika as Vice-President
  • February 1988 Vijaya was assassinated in front of his wife
  • Lived in England for three years until return to Sri Lanka in 1991
  • 1994 the People's Alliance Kumaratunga's new coalition won the elections
  • August 1994 Kumaratunga sworn in as Prime Minister
  • December 1994 Kumaratunga elected President and mother becomes Prime Minister
