  • Born June 1945 in Rangoon, Burma
  • Daughter of national leader, General Aung San, of Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League
  • Father assassinated in 1947, he was just 32 years old
  • Aung San Suu Kyi studied at Oxford University, then worked for UN Secretariat in New York
  • Married scholar Michael Aris, two sons. Lived in England until 1988 return to Burma
  • 1989 military takeover in Burma, Aung San Suu Kyi (NLD leader) placed under house arrest
  • 1990 National League for Democracy Party won in 80% of regions, Aung San Suu Kyi still under house arrest
  • 1991 wins Nobel Peace Prize
  • 1995 freed from house arrest but remains in Burma
