Declining working hours in France has coincided with greater productivity - rising from $22.37 an hour in 1980 to $35.13 in 2003.

However, British productivity has also increased, rising from $16.79 to $27.75 an hour over the same period.

Greater productivity in France may not be due to rigid working hours, but other economic factors.
