Bailey talks to one half of the infamous D&B duo Fabio & Grooverider.

"Fabio is one of the original DJs to champion the drum & bass sound right from the start more than 10 years ago. If you need a lesson on how this sound of the streets evolved from house music at a time when dance was dominated by white DJs, Fabio is the perfect place to start.
His perseverance has led him to being one of the most respected and pioneering figures within drum & bass." DJ Bailey

Fabio has been DJing since that late 80s, originally drawing inspiration from the Rare Groove movement and then moving into the early House scene. Fabio was inspirational in the metamorphous of house, into rave and then into jungle.

DJing on early pirate radio stations lead to him presenting on London's Kiss FM before the jump to Radio 1 and the original '1 in the Jungle show'. Along the way Fabio has been instrumental in setting up seminal clubs such as Rage where some may say jungle was born and alongside LTJ Bukem he set up the legendary Speed club which spawned intelligent drum & bass, a reaction to the more jump up sound of the bigger raves prevailing at the time.

He has also been effective in promoting the careers of new artists and was the first to release music on his own Creative Source label from the now highly respected D&B producer Calibre. Fabio is also the author of the term 'liquid funk'. Fabio used this term as a way of separating his taste of drum & bass from the masses.

Reinforced Records
Iconic label: Reinforced

Listen to the interview

"From the very beginning of our breakbeat revolution, the four guys known as the Reinforced have been there - pushing studio equipment further than anyone, releasing tracks for their musical content not sales potential and never closing the ranks to new blood. Reinforced are the drum and bass heroes - fusion never sounded so good!" L Double

L Double looks at the seminal label of Reinforced, influential to the likes of Goldie.

The Reinforced label has been at the forefront of drum & bass scene for over a decade. It was started in June 1989 by Ian Bardouille, Gus Lawrence and producers Marc Mac Clair and Dego McFarlane aka 4 Hero.

With a catalogue of old skool club classics such as 4 Hero's 'Mr Kirk's Nightmare', Nookie's 'The Sound of Music', Doc Scott's 'Here Come the Drumz' and the classic Parallel Universe LP by 4 Hero, Reinforced became a revered label.

They have never followed trends, always taking risks and pushing the boundaries of drum and bass music. We salute them this month as the godfathers of drum & bass.
