Robert Mugabe On December 31 1987 Prime Minister Robert Mugabe was formally installed as Zimbabwe's first executive President. Mugabe is still in power today and is seen as one of the most militant and most uncompromising of leaders.
He remains in harsh conflict with Western governments over the running of Zimbabwe. The Commonwealth has also suspended Zimbabwe from participating in its meetings until it improved its record as a democracy.
