Developing country population structure

A population pyramid showing the percentages of the people living in India

Describing the pyramid

In this graph, notice that in 2000 the 0-4 age group contained the largest number of people, with the numbers thereafter declining steadily as the ages increase. This means there is a high birth rate and low life expectancy.

This pyramid shows a youthful population.

Consequences of a youthful population:

  • Too many young people, puts an added strain on services e.g. health care.
  • Extra money is required to build more schools to accommodate children.
  • More teachers and midwives are required to be trained.
  • Not enough homes, so shanty towns increase.
