Checking time and staff availability at the climbing wall

Speaker 1: Oh hello there, you OK?

Speaker 2: Hi. Do you have a slot available for 3 people to climb today please?

Speaker 1: Do you want to come in and take a seat and I'll have a look for you?

Speaker 2: OK.

Speaker 1: (TO AUDIENCE) I need to work out if I can fit 3 people into a climbing session today.

A climbing session lasts for 1 hour and we have a 30 minute briefing beforehand.

I can't have any more than 32 members at any one session and we also need to make sure that we have enough staff in the climbing room.

We normally work on a ratio of 5 climbers to 1 member of staff but we never have fewer than 2 staff members in the arena at one time.

The next session starts with a briefing at 11:30 and I can see on the list that we have 18 climbers booked in for that slot but we have a party room and that might be booked so I need to have a look at that too.

Yup, the party room is booked with 12 climbers so 12 plus 18 is 30, so with 3 more climbers, it will take us over our 32 maximum.

So the next session is at 12:30.

I can see we have 24 climbers booked in for that and our next party won't be booked in until 1:15 and there's no one booked.

So 24 plus 3 is 27 so yes, I can fit them in then.

Next, I need to check that we have enough staff on duty before I let the customer know I can fit her in.

Speaker 1: (TO AUDIENCE) So we need to make sure we have enough staff to cover the next climbing session.

We usually work on a ratio of 5 climbers to 1 member of staff, and there will be 27 climbers in the 12:30 slot, so I need to work out how many staff I need for 27 people.

So 5 climbers is in theory 1 staff member, but we always have 2.

So 10 climbers is 2, 15 climbers is 3, 20 climbers is 4, and 25 climbers is 5.

That's still not enough because we have 27 climbers, so I'll need to scale this up to 30.

30 climbers is 6 members of staff, so I'll need 6 members of staff to cover all of the climbers.

Speaker 2: (TO OTHER PEOPLE) How are you getting on, Beth?

Speaker 1: Well, we've got 3 climbers that wanna come in.

We've got the capacity, I just don't know if we've got the staff for it.

Speaker 2: OK, great, well, have a look at the rota, see who is in and see who we can use.

Speaker 1: Cool. OK.

Speaker 1: (TO AUDIENCE) So I've got Ellie and Rachel in the arena all day.

Jason and Will are in there from 12 until 10 pm.

So that's 4 people. Oh, and there's Tom and me.

But Ellie is on her break between 12:30 and 1:00.

So how am I going to do this?

I know: if I shift Ellie's break to 1:30, that will give us enough staff to cover the session.
