Calculating the right number of mascara brushes to order

Speaker 1: Hey, I'm about to do a stock order for the next 2 weeks, can you check how many packs of mascara brushes we've got?

Because there's a note saying that we're running low.

Make sure there's enough because you can't double dip them because of cross-contamination.

Speaker 2: OK.

Speaker 1: It's £1.88 a pack. We're really busy for the next two weeks, so please make sure there's enough.

Speaker 2: Yeah, that's fine, I'll check the diary pages and I'll also check the stock cupboard.

Speaker 1: OK, thank you.

Speaker 2: Thank you. (TO AUDIENCE) So we've got 2 packs in stock and 20 brushes in each pack.

What I will need to do is work out what we need per room per day, then multiply that by the amount of days the salon is open.

And I mustn't forget the extras we'll need for the next week when we're really busy.

Then, I'll work out the cost.

Speaker: So we're placing an order for stock that must last at least 2 weeks.

I need to work out how many brushes we use in each treatment room in a day and then in a week.

And then I'll multiply this by 3, the number of treatment rooms.

We use 10 in a day in each treatment room.

So I'll multiply 3 by 10, and that's 30, which means we use 30 brushes in the salon each day.

So we're open 5 days a week. So 5 times 30 equals 150.

But we're stocking up for 2 weeks.

So I need to double the number of brushes or multiply by 2. So that's 300.

Ah, but it needs to be an order for packs, not individual brushes.

Each pack holds 20 brushes. So if I divide 300 by 20, I'll get the amount of packs.

That's 300 divided by 20, which is the same as 30 divided by 2. So that's 15.

Speaker 1: How are you getting on?

Speaker 2: I've worked out that 150 brushes are used per week.

So that's 300 for the fortnight, which is 15 packs.

I just need to add the extras for the busy week we've got coming up.

Speaker 1: OK, great. Can you work out the total cost for me?

Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll do that for you.

Speaker 1: OK, thank you.

Speaker 2: (TO AUDIENCE) So I've looked in the diary and I'm twice as busy next week and I'm only in 1 treatment room.

1 room needs 50 brushes per week.

So to work out how many packs I need, I divide 50 by 20, that's 2.5.

But packs don't come in halves, so I'll add 3 to the total of 15, that's 18.

Now I need to work out the cost.

The packs cost £1.88 and to work out the cost in total, I'll multiply £1.88 by 18.

That comes to £33.84. Great, I'll give this to Liz to get an order in.
