Concert Information
James MacMillan dedicated his Violin Concerto to the memory of his mother. But as last seasonâs acclaimed BBC SSO cycle of MacMillanâs piano concertos showed, thereâs more to anything by MacMillan than meets the ear: as one critic put it, this is a work âso full of ideas that you might wonder if he couldnât have written two concertosâ. In the hands of its dedicatee, the great Vadim Repin, itâs an arresting companion-piece for Beethovenâs much-loved (and deceptively relaxed) âPastoralâ symphony, and the quiet revolution of Debussyâs sensuous PrĂ©lude; works chosen by Donald Runnicles both to complement, and to strike sparks off, each other.
