Concert Information
James MacMillan dedicated his Violin Concerto to the memory of his mother. But as last seasonās acclaimed BBC SSO cycle of MacMillanās piano concertos showed, thereās more to anything by MacMillan than meets the ear: as one critic put it, this is a work āso full of ideas that you might wonder if he couldnāt have written two concertosā. In the hands of its dedicatee, the great Vadim Repin, itās an arresting companion-piece for Beethovenās much-loved (and deceptively relaxed) āPastoralā symphony, and the quiet revolution of Debussyās sensuous PrĆ©lude; works chosen by Donald Runnicles both to complement, and to strike sparks off, each other.
