오늘 이 시간에는 ‘a can of worms’ ‘지렁이 한 통’이라는 표현을 배우겠습니다. 지렁이가… 한 통?? 도대체 무슨 뜻 같나요? 자 그럼 더 들어보면서 한번 알아보겠습니다.

Finn과 FeiFei의 대화를 한 번 들어보세요. Finn이 지렁이 ‘worms’에 대해 열심히 조사를 해서 FeiFei에게 이야기해주고 있는데요, 그가 무엇을 새로 배웠는지 들어볼까요?

Worms are great – don't you think they're really interesting?

Feifei
Erm, yeah, kind of. But what's today's phrase?

Finn
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we'll come to that in a minute. But, did you know earthworms, the kind
you normally find in the soil, are both male and female in one body?

Feifei
That is quite interesting.

Finn
And if you cut a worm in half – only one part of the worm will die!

Feifei
Yes, the part with the fat little bump on it will survive. I knew that.

Finn
Fascinating, isn’t it? And earthworms can be really short – from only one millimetre – to a massive three metres!

Finn은 흙지렁이 ‘earthworms’에 대해 이야기하고 있습니다. 그는 지렁이들이 수컷 ‘male’인 동시에 암컷 ‘female’일 수 있음을 발견했습니다. 그리고 지렁이를 반으로 잘라도 그들은 survive 생존할 수 있으며, 최대 three metres 3미터까지 자랄 수 있다고 합니다. 도대체 그가 왜 지렁이에 대해 이토록 이야기하는 것인지 들어볼까요?

Sorry, yes, I was doing some research for today's programme. The phrase, today, is: a can of
worms!

Feifei
Right. Well 'a can of worms' is a phrase we use to describe a situation that causes a lot of
problems when you start to deal with it.

Finn
Yes, sometimes you want to deal with a problem, but you realise that by dealing with that problem, it will open up a whole set of new problems.

Finn은 지렁이에 대해 열심히 읽어서 흥미로운 사실들을 많이 알아냈습니다. 하지만 Feifei는 도대체 왜 지렁이에 대해 그가 그토록 열변을 토하는지 이해할 수 없었습니다. 오늘 우리가 배울 영어 표현이 ‘a can of worms’ ‘지렁이 한 통’이라는 걸 알기 전까진 말입니다.
