오늘은 잘 모르는 단어를 어떻게 영어로 설명하는지 배워보도록 하겠습니다. 어떤 것을 영어로 어떻게 말하는지 몰라서 다른 단어로 설명하는 세 사람의 말을 들어보겠습니다. 알아듣지 못해도 걱정하지마세요. 잠시 후에 같이 살펴볼게요. 일단은 이 세 사람이  설명하는 것이 무엇인지 맞춰보세요.

무엇에 대해 설명하는지 아시겠어요? 첫번째 사람은 banana 바나나에 대해 얘기했습니다. 두번째 사람은 dirty 더러움에 대해 말했고 세 번째 사람은 a watch 시계에 대해 얘기했네요. 자 이제 영어로 어떤 단어를 모를 때 설명하는 방법을 몇가지 배워볼겠습니다.

Good idea! So the first person used 'it's a kind of'. You can use this phrase to talk about the category of the thing you are describing. So, for a banana, we can say 'it's a kind of fruit’. And for 'a cat' we can say 'it's a kind of animal'.

그렇죠. 'It's a kind of…' ~의 한 종류다..라는 뜻입니다. 여기서 kind 대신 type을 쓸 수도 있겠죠? So we can also say 'it's a type of', can't we?

That's right. So we can also say ‘it's a type of fruit'.

다음 사람은 형용사 dirty  더러운..을 설명하고 있는데요. Clean의 반댓말이라고 설명했네요. 영어로 뭐라고 했는지 기억하시나요? 다시 한 번 들어보세요.

Yes, 'it's the opposite of…'  So this is a useful way to describe an adjective, if you know its opposite.

이렇게 말하셨나요? 자, 마지막사람은 a watch 시계에 대해 말했는데요. A watch는 흔히 손목시계를 말하고 a clock은 탁상시계나 벽걸이 시계를 말합니다. 여기서 a clock 시계와 비슷하다..라고 말했네요. 이걸 영어로 뭐라고 했는지 기억하시나요

So we can use the phrase 'it's like' plus the thing to say that something is similar to something else. You can also use 'it's similar to'.

자 연습해볼까요? 자 마늘이라는 단어가 기억나지 않을 경우, 이것은 vegetable 채소의 한 종류다..라고 어떻게 말할까요? 그리고 onion과 비슷하다..라고도 말해볼게요.

Did you say the same? 'It’s a type of vegetable' 그리고 'it's similar to an onion' 이렇게도 말할 수 있겠죠? 다음으로는 못생긴..이라는 단어가 생각이 안나네요. 하지만 beautiful 아름다운..이라는 단어는 기억이 납니다. 그럼 어떻게 말할 수 있을까요?
