大家好,欢迎收听 BBC 英语教学的 “你问我答” 节目。This is Question and Answer of the Week, where we answer your questions about English language, culture and life. I'm Buli.

Georgie
And I'm Georgie. So, Buli, here's what we're going to do. A listener is going to ask us about a problem they have with English. We're going to think about it, then talk about it, and hopefully our audience can learn about it. How does that sound?

Buli
That sounds great, Georgie. And I hope they won't forget about it straight after!

Question
I notice that some verbs can be followed by the preposition 'about', such as in 'tell me about it' and 'forget about it.' However, the meanings seem quite similar whether these verbs take 'about' or not. I'd like to understand:

What exactly is the difference between using 'about' and not using it?
In what situations should I add 'about'?
Which verbs can be followed by 'about'?

Georgie
This is a very interesting question, because it's about the word 'about'.

Buli
That's true. 这位听众想知道介词 “about” 在和动词搭配时的使用方法,特别是哪些动词后面可以搭配 “about”,以及 “about” 这个词在搭配动词时具体表达出了什么意思。

Georgie
OK. So, I think the key words here are 'topic' and 'idea'. And what I mean by that is that we use the preposition 'about' with verbs that are usually used with topics, ideas or situations. A great example of this is the verbs about communication.

Buli
是的,介词 “about” 在搭配动词时通常可以理解成 “关于……” 或者 “对于……” 的意思。它通常用于引出某个 “话题” 或者 “想法”,所以它经常会搭配和 “communication(沟通交流)” 有关的动词。比如,我们会说 “talk about something(谈论某事)”、“tell someone about something(告诉某人某事)”、“ask about something(询问某事)” 和 “hear about something(听说某事)” 等等。They're all about a topic or an idea that you're communicating about.

Georgie
Exactly right. Another group of verbs that we use with 'about' are verbs related to thinking and knowing. Buli, what's the topic of this programme?

Buli
Let me think about it… it's verbs to use with 'about', right?

Georgie
Right. And we are English teachers, so we know about the topic. When we received the question, we had to think about it. The audience will hopefully learn about it. Again, it's all about a topic or an idea. What are you thinking about?

Buli
I'm thinking about lunch… I've got something really tasty in my backpack…

Georgie
There you go! There's an idea in your head, and you're thinking about it. Anyway, get your attention back to this programme.

Buli
Sorry. Let me recap so that I can forget about my snack.

也就是说,“about” 也经常搭配跟 “思考,思维活动” 有关的动词。比如,“think about(想……)”、“learn about(学习,了解……)”、“know about(知道……)”。So what are some other verbs we can use with 'about'?

Georgie
Well, the next category of verbs to talk about is ones related to feelings. Again, feelings related to a topic or situation. So, for example, I'm a bit worried about my commute later… I heard all the trains are cancelled. What are you feeling, Buli?

Buli
I'm very excited about my lunch – it's going to be delicious!

Georgie
Wow, OK, I've really got you worked up about your lunch, haven't I? Anything else?

Buli
Well, I was a bit upset about my favourite football team losing, but I feel much better about it now. 在谈论情感或感受时,我们可以说 “feel about(对……有感觉)”、“worry about(对……感到忧虑)”、“be excited about(对……感到兴奋)”。

你正在收听的是 BBC 英语教学制作的 “你问我答” 节目。在本期节目中,我们正在学习介词 “about” 在搭配动词时的用法和含义。刚才,我和 Georgie 分享了几种通常可以搭配 “about” 的动词和具体的使用场景,但有时我们也不能随意在动词后面使用 “about”,这是为什么呢?

OK, Georgie. So, what about the instances where we don't use 'about'? For example, what's the difference between 'I told him about the trip' and 'I told him the answer'?

Georgie
Good question. When you don't use 'about', you are focused on a specific thing or piece of information. So, in the sentence 'I told him the answer', I'm being much more direct. He's getting a specific piece of information. If I told him about my trip, there are many possibilities of what I told him. It's about my experience.

Buli
Ah, I see. Another example with the verb 'think' – 'I think the sky is blue' is a specific thought, whereas 'I think about why the sky is blue' is more about a topic to explore.

Georgie
Exactly!

Buli
