Storyteller
Many years ago a peasant with his son lived in a village. They were very poor and only had one horse.
One day, the horse ran away. The peasant’s neighbours came to his house.
‘This is a very bad thing!’ they said.
He thanked them for their visit, but asked, ‘How do you know this is a very bad thing?’
A week later, the horse returned with a mare. The peasant’s neighbours came to his house again. ‘This is a very good thing!’ they said.
Again, he thanked them for their visit, but asked:
‘How do you know this is a very good thing?’

Storyteller
A month later, the peasant’s son was working with the horses when he fell and broke his leg. The neighbours returned.
‘This is a very bad thing!’ they said.
‘How do you know this is a very bad thing?’ the peasant asked.
A few months later there was a war. The army came to the village and took all the healthy young men. The only one they left was the peasant’s son, because of his broken leg. Eventually, all of the young men died in the war but after a while, the peasant’s son recovered.
Several months later the two horses had a foal that was sold at a good price.
In the end, the village understood the peasant’s questions. Things are not always all very good or all very bad.
